Week five of The FM Home Loans AFI League was a week of prime time matchups. All evening long, top teams were fighting it out for top seeding if front of a standing room only crowd at Kraft Stadium in Jerusalem. Many games were very close and came down to the last drive of the game. With the season almost half way completed for most teams, it looks wide open to who will raise the Holy Land Bowl trophy at the end of the 30th season of The FM Home Loans AFI League.
Salty Pretzels (2-6) VS. T-Seahawks (5-3)
The Salty Pretzels continued to surprise teams and received big help from wide receiver Jed Fortinsky’s two touchdown receptions to pick up the upset in game one 12-7. T-Seahawks came back in game two behind their leader, quarterback Meir Reischer, to win game two 14-6.
Jerry’s Kids (4-4) VS. DEC (4-3-1)
Jerry’s Kids had both sides of the ball clicking, taking game one in shutout fashion 8-0 in big help from a defensive safety and a touchdown reception from wide receiver Ari Loeb. DEC’s offense had no answer against the shutdown defense of Jerry’s Kids, getting shutout again in game two 20-0.
Vintage Vikings (4-2-2) VS. Big Blue (3-4-1)
Vintage Vikings continued their winning streak as quarterback Nussie Felder threw touchdowns to wide receivers Bini Edell and Yonason Brody for an impressive game one 12-6 victory. Nussie Felder threw for two more touchdowns in a game two 14-6 win, for the hot Vintage Vikings.
Chiakel Travel (6-2) VS. Psychobunny’s (6-2)
Psychobunny’s came back from an early 6-0 deficit to shock Chaikel Travel, after quarterback Ari Ganz threw a late touchdown pass to wide receiver Tzvi Kornfeld to complete the upset against the defending champions 13-6 in game one. Chaikel Travel’s defense stepped up big time behind Zevi Schechter’s two interceptions, leading the champs in a game two 19-0 shutout.
Senter Kings (1-4-1) VS. Piazzeria Efrat (4-4)
Pizzeria Efrat’s quarterback Akiva Schwartz found wide receiver Eitan Redlich for a touchdown with less than one minute to go in the game to sneak a game one victory 7-6. Pizzeria Efrat’s defense was powerful, under leader Yoni Schwartz, who had two safeties on the night to help propel his team to a game two 11-6 win.
Toras Chaim (6-1-1) VS. Mercaz Moosen (1-4-1)
Both teams battled and missed key opportunities to take the lead in what ended up being a hard fought 6-6 tie in game one. Toras Chaim’s quarterback Shuey Dachs found his favorite target Shmuli Sauer for two touchdowns in a game two 12-6 win.
Bayberry Broncos (4-2) VS. Route 38 Roughriders (1-7)
Broncos quarterback Amiel Kerstein threw touchdowns to wide receivers Shai Laniado and Harrison Kurtizky to complete a game one shutout 18-0. The Roughriders fought hard in game two, but fell short to the Broncos 18-13 in game two.
The Deep Sleepers (5-3) VS. Mud Dogs (1-4-1)
The Mud Dogs shocked the Deep Sleepers as new quarterback Raphael Hersher found wide receiver Shmuel Abraham for a late touchdown to pull off the upset in game one 8-7. The Deep Sleepers came back to win a close game two 13-12.
